The Teachers

About Tanya: I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, immersed in the rich tapestry of oral language and the beautiful tradition of storytelling. I am an elementary school teacher with over 30 years of experience. I have a bachelor's degree in education and master's degree in special education - both from Wheelock College. I taught K-5 bilingual education for many years and have been a kindergarten teacher for the past 20 years. I am the co-director of a summer tutoring camp (with Lauren). I am also a published author. I write picture books as well as poetry and fiction. I have two grown children, and my husband is also a teacher. I love all things related to teaching and learning, so creating resources for educators brings me immense joy. Reading, for me, is a fundamental human right.

About Lauren: I grew up in Connecticut, went to Vassar College for undergrad, and then got my Master’s Degree in Reading and Language from UMass Lowell. I’ve been a kindergarten teacher for the past 20 years. I am the co-director of an outdoor integrated summer camp that provides literacy and STEAM instruction while exploring nature. I have two little kids - a 1st grader and an almost-5 year old, and my husband is a college professor. I’m really committed to play-based learning and teaching about social justice in my classroom.
